Autogamy
Self-fertilization (also known as autogamy) occurs in hermaphroditic organisms where the two gametes fused in fertilization come from the same individual. They are bound and all the cells merge to form one new gamete.
I was starting my career as an artist with a series of landscape paintings that best corresponded to a view of fields from an airplane. Later I took elements that I used to structure individual surfaces and made them the theme of abstract paintings. Paintings dealing with systems in the sense of order and chaos, not concerned with an abstraction of landscape or a concrete structure, but rather in capturing in a picture a possibility how organic structures can function.
In a way all paintings are sketches for an idea that I cannot formulate either verbally or in painting. The source I draw from are my own paintings; so there are no other sources, except the original one: that of landscape painting. Always trying to continuously expand the scope of my work I started to use my paintings as the base for new works produced with the help of today‘s technical possibilities including film and video.
For an art project on a street in Vienna I used a 1:1 scan of a picture segment that I revised on the computer and developed a new large surface from the individual elements of a small segment. The idea was to create an „all over pattern“ that could be placed over everything possible. The semi-transparent sheet attains life and color through what is moving behind it at any speed.
„dadurch, dass sich das dahinter in welcher geschwindigkeit auch immer bewegt, entsteht ein sich ständig veränderndes bild“ („as the background is moving at any speed, a continuously changing picture emerges“) was filmed through this semi-transparent sheet. The whole movie was filmed and cut in super8 and transferred to digital video later. The music was recorded live to the video.
Another method I am using is to photocopy my own paintings, assemble new pictures from this and then revise them again. The paintings are duplicated - and that with the most common method an office copy machine. The fact that I chose transparent paper rather than normal copy paper has to do with the sensual fascination of the material and my background as an educated architect. This also provides a broader scope, you can work on both sides and put layers on top of one other.
„ROTATIONLOOP“ is a loop animated out of digital photographs of a work on paper based on these photocopies of a painting acrylic on canvas. The endlessly ongoing rotation deals with today‘s possibility to produce uncountable copies of one original with the press of a button.
